PrideAlliance announces national gathering

PrideAlliance, the queer network of the Alliance Party, will be holding its first national gathering on Saturday September 25 in Wellington. Alliance members from around the country who don't fit the heterosexual nuclear family stereotype will be coming together to discuss queer issues, network, and make plans for the future.

But the gathering will not be restricted to current Alliance members. "This will also be a good opportunity for prospective members to sound us out before taking the plunge," said PrideAlliance spokesperson Kelly Buchanan. "Other queer socialists and sympathisers will also be welcome, even if they don't wish to actually join the party."

The Alliance has an excellent record on queer rights, and is the _only_ major party that actively supports same-sex marriage. "While the Civil Union Bill is a positive step, separate is not equal," said Ms Buchanan. "Everyone should have the same legal options for recognition of their relationships, irrespective of the genders of their partners." Most queer New Zealanders would also benefit from other Alliance policies such as free healthcare and education, higher minimum wages and benefits, and shifting the tax burden on to the rich.

Most of the women attending the gathering are expected to go on to the Lesbian Ball afterwards. The possibility of an evening event for the boys is still being investigated.
