Federation Of Ethnic Councils - Tsunami

Federation Of Ethnic Councils - Tsunami

The Federation of Ethnic Councils expresses its deep sympathy and condolences to those affected by the recent tsunami that has affected so many communities in Asia, India and Africa.

Members of New Zealand’s ethnic communities are waiting anxiously of news of families and friends. It is a very difficult time for them. Other Kiwis are waiting on news of their families and friends who were visiting the area when the tsunami hit. We share a joint experience.

New Zealand is a very generous society and each of us are doing all we can to support one another, whether it be donations to the major aid agencies, selling sausages in the street to raise money for affected areas, or going to visit a neighbour affected and offering the support they need.

The Federation urges New Zealanders to continue this support. This tragedy touches us all

This will be an ongoing tragedy that will take many years if ever to rectify. Many of the affected communities were poor, relying on the tourist trade to survive. Many lived in shanty towns on the side of the oceans. They have few resources on which to draw. They need all our help at this time and in the years ahead.

Whilst the New Zealand Government has responded quickly and with generosity, we are hopeful that their commitment will continue into the years ahead. A number of different countries with different cultures and beliefs have been affected by this tragedy. We strongly request that the New Zealand Government’s support ensures that any aid or support given to those in need in these countries enables the appropriate respects and traditions to be adhered to in the provision of services such as medical aid, burial of the dead and daily food for survival.

The Federation is also accepting donations from thye ethnic communities that will be forwarded to these regions. All donation made to the federation will be provided with an official receipt. Amounts donated are tax deductible. Donations can be sent to. South Asia Tsunami Relief Fund, C/o New Zealand federation of Ethnic Councils, PO Box 1409, Wellington.
