“Te Mangoroa Hikoi against the Seabed and Foreshore Legislation”

Christchurch based “Te Mangoroa” are organising a hikoi through the Christchurch Central Business District to signal their disgust on the day the Seabed and Foreshore legislation comes into effect.

“Monday 17th January is a sad day for Maori and Non-Maori alike” states Te Mangoroa Co-Spokesperson, Malcolm Mulholland. “Our hikoi is to mark the day when a law that denies a people their rights comes into effect”. “It is a national day of mourning”, states Mulholland.

Te Mangoroa organised a successful occupation of New Brighton Pier in December last year. “The purpose of the occupation was to educate people on the issues surrounding the Seabed and Foreshore”, states Co-Spokesperson Whetu Moataane. “We were well received by those who came to the pier to talk about the Seabed and Foreshore and found ourselves being supported by an overwhelming majority of people. We ask those who support our cause to join us on the streets of Christchurch to send a clear message to the Government – that this issue will not go away”, states Moataane.

The Hikoi will assemble at Hagley Park on Monday 17th January at 11.00 and proceed down Worcester St to Cathedral Square. At Cathedral Square will be several guest speakers as well as educational flyers to be distributed to people on the Seabed and Foreshore issue.
