Governor-General to attend the funeral of Pope John Paul II
The Governor-General Dame Silvia Cartwright will travel to Rome to represent New Zealand at the funeral of the Pope, John Paul II.
The Governor-General Dame Silvia Cartwright has paid tribute to Pope John Paul II, saying his passing marks the end of an era.
"Pope John Paul II was a world leader in turbulent times," Dame Silvia said. "He was a man of compassion and a man of strong values."
She said Pope John Paul II would be mourned by Catholics and many others in New Zealand and around the world.
During the absence of the Governor-General, the Chief Justice Dame Sian Elias will act as Administrator of Government.
