Commissioner's Award for Regional Leaders Announced

The State Services Commissioner, Mark Prebble, today announced the joint recipients of the inaugural Commissioner's Award for Regional Leaders.

The Award, of up to $40,000, is to be used to fund further academic study, a piece of research or a secondment with the aim of increasing the recipients' leadership potential.

The winners of the inaugural Award are: John Henderson, the Regional Commissioner for Canterbury at the Ministry of Social Development, and Phillip Journeaux, the Regional Team Leader with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry's Policy Unit in Hamilton.

"They will both receive funding for the proposals they put forward as part of the application process. Their proposals together total around $40,000.

"This award has been specially developed for regional managers as SSC research has identified a shortage of a regional perspective in the developing future leadership pool for the State Services. Regional leaders are often well placed to contribute different views on the public's experience of government. Their regional experience adds a valuable perspective that is sometimes missed in central government activities," Mark Prebble said.

John Henderson will use the award funding to conduct research across the public sector on the evolving development of a co-ordinated state sector, while Phillip Journeaux will study towards a Post Graduate Diploma in Management Studies at the University of Waikato.

"John and Phillip were chosen for their commitment to undertake relevant development experiences that linked well with their current responsibilities and future career aspirations in the Public Service," Mark Prebble said.
