Quax Urges 40kp/h Speed Limit around Schools

Councillor Dick Quax has expressed satisfaction with the strict enforcement of the 50 kilometre per hour speed limit around school zones which began on the first day back at school.

"The Police were outside Elm Park School in Pakuranga on Tuesday morning which I believe is a very good thing. From the work that was done at Elm Park last year we know that some cars are flying past that school at over 100 kilometres per hour", said Mr Quax.

However Mr Quax says that he still favours a temporary 40 kilometre per hour speed restriction around schools in some particularly sensitive areas and will continue to urge the Manukau City Council to implement that.

"Not all my colleagues agree with me but with 34 children aged 5 to 18 killed and another 2055 injured before and after school around New Zealand in the last five years to the end of December 2005 a temporary speed restriction makes sense".

"I note with interest that the Automobile Association is also advocating a temporary 40kp/h zone around schools."
