Pacific Island states attending an International Firearms Safety Seminar held in Christchurch this week believe the wide range of ideas discussed at the seminar can be adapted in their home states to improve firearms safety.

Cook Islands Deputy Commissioner of Police, Maara Tetava says the combined firearms safety clout of New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the United States on show at the seminar has given the Pacific Island reps plenty to take home, digest and adapt to their needs.

“We had nine of the 14 states from the Pacific Forum attending the seminar and we all agree that we have learnt plenty – we are hopeful we can put these ideas into practice adapted to our individual requirements, but from a Cook Islands perspective with a new Arms Act currently being drafted, this seminar has been invaluable.

“More education on firearms safety is the key, especially around the licensing process – some of our States are already talking to the New Zealand authorities about helping us with safety training”, said Mr Tetava.
