“We Want to Know What on Earth We Are Eating”
This is the message to parliament from concerned
consumers throughout
New Zealand, preceding the final
parliamentary reading next week of Sue Kedgley’s CONSUMERS
RIGHT TO KNOW (FOOD INFORMATION) BILL which aims to give
people the information they need to make informed choices
about what food they decide to eat.
Sue Kedgley says,”Although it appears at this stage that both National and the Labour Party will oppose the bill (thereby defeating it) there is a chance the major parties will revisit their decision on Tuesday 27th June, the day before the final vote is taken.”
A group of Thames people are taking their message of support for the bill to the street today (Friday 23rd June) in a planned demonstration outside National sitting member Sandra Goudie’s office.
The group’s organiser, Denise Davis says, ‘’As a health professional I am concerned about this important issue and believe that knowing what our food contains, how it’s produced and where it comes from is a fundamental human right. We hope that Thames people, who are usually very astute, will help us send this message to parliament.”
Commenting on the bill, Green Party Co-leader, Jeanette Fitzsimons says,’’It is true that we are what we eat, therefore it is important that consumers are fully informed about what it is they are putting into their bodies.”
At the demonstration there will be a petition and leaflets advising people of actions they can take in a last minute effort of support for the bill before the final decision is made in the beehive next Wednesday.
