New MFAT Deputy Secretary Appointed
Career diplomat Peter Hamilton has been appointed Deputy Secretary responsible for corporate services and Europe at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, chief executive Simon Murdoch said today.
He will replace John Larkindale, who has been appointed New Zealand’s High Commissioner to Australia.
Mr Hamilton takes up his new position in December. His role will involve oversight of the Ministry’s corporate management, including human resources, finance, information technology, property and capital management, and security. He will also oversee New Zealand’s relations with Europe.
Mr Hamilton is currently New Zealand Ambassador to Germany, based in Berlin. He has previously served as High Commissioner to Samoa, Director of MFAT’s Trade and Economic Analysis Division, and Chief Negotiator of bilateral free trade agreements.
He has had overseas postings to Fiji, Canada and to the World Trade Organisation in Geneva. In 1983-84 he worked on secondment to the Prime Minister’s Department.
Mr Hamilton joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1977. He has a MA (Hons) degree from Auckland University.
