Help for New Migrants to Find Work

Help for New Migrants to Find Work

It is becoming increasingly evident that many new migrants wishing to settle in New Zealand are not qualifying because of difficulty in finding suitable employment. The government’s work-to-residence scheme has led many prospective migrants to come to New Zealand in the belief that it is relatively easy to obtain work here. Sadly, this is not the case.

Immigrants from the Philippines are having particular difficulty with finding employment within the short time frame allowed. Visiting New Zealand to research the market here is Filipino immigration lawyer Dr Benedicto T. Javier, an economist, college professor, public administrator, and lawyer, from Manila. Dr Javier and his company JEJ Manpower has many skilled people from the Philippines wishing to migrate to New Zealand, but insists that they have job offers first, to avoid disappointment on arriving in New Zealand and not finding employment. He has requests from nurses and other health-care related jobs, kindergarten teachers, farm workers, meat processors, automotive mechanics, and other professionals – many of the skilled people that New Zealand employers are unable to obtain locally.

Having a job offer in advance avoids the bitter disappointment and the considerable financial hardship encountered at times by highly qualified and skilled workers who would have a lot to offer our business economy, but who do not have the contacts to secure positions in a timely manner. As the legislation stands, potential migrants must find a permanent position in their area of expertise within six months of arrival. This is often impossible for a newcomer to achieve in the allotted time frame.

JEJ is a Philippine manpower recruitment and placement agency duly authorized by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) and the Department of Labour and Employment (DOLE). The JEJ company provides professional immigration assistance and advice for parties and professionals interested in permanently migrating to Australia or New Zealand.

In conjunction with Immigration Placement Services Ltd, suitable applicants from the Philippines are matched to actual or impending vacancies around the country. Work visas can then be arranged complying with the government’s skilled migrants work-to-residence regulations, and thus the new arrivals come ready to take up a job placement immediately, avoiding the soul destroying disappointment of previous candidates who have returned to their home countries empty handed.

Dr Javier (whose company, JEJ, stands for the initials of his children, Jose, Elena and John) will be in New Zealand next week (12 – 19 February) and will be visiting several businesses around New Zealand to discuss their employment needs.
