Media Release: Seed for Peace event
From: Innermost Women
Date: 8 March 2007
Innermost group was born
less than one year ago as a refugee, migrant and local
women's community garden project. Women from many
different nationalities such as Somalian, Zimbabwean,
Iraqis, Turkish, Netherlander, Hungarian, Australian,
Scottish, Brazilian, Bolivian and local women, aim to create
the first multicultural communal garden.
Innermost women plan to celebrate International Women's Day through an event " Seed for Peace". This will take place at their first garden site in Mt Victoria at 6:30pm on Thursday, 8 March 2007. The group member Emet Alpay - Degirmenci states "the meaning of this garden is very significant. We are going to create a peace garden which will be a flower with pedals representing each continent. The central part of the garden, design includes indigenous plants, because as new comers to this country we pay respect to native culture. We believe there are many things to learn from natives such as plants, flowers and trees in terms of medicinal use, herbal use or theatrical use as well as other aspects"
"Please feel free to extend this invitation to your women friends, girlfriends, or your mothers, aunties and daughters and sisters who we are looking forward to connect with them .We will be at peace while taking part in a peace dance, holding handfuls of seeds. We also will wish for peace around the world, because war is still happening at some of our's home countries, or some of our governments are involving in to war saddly " Emet also said.
Innermost women invite all women together at their garden site from 6:30 at the Old Bandoleers Club (next to the men's golf club), which is between Majoribanks St and Lawson Place in the Town Belt, Mt Victoria. Then they will continue the celebration at YWCA Wellington, 75 Ghuznee Street, Level 3 at 8pm. This is another space for women to share stories from their countries and from somewhere their around with live music. Also the group is going to share women's stories.
