Protest at meat industry conference 11am Saturday at Te Papa, Wellington
Animal rights protesters will gather at Te Papa Museum in Wellington on Saturday morning to oppose a meat industry conference being held there. Meat Industry bosses are holding a conference to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the first frozen meat exports.
The protest starts at 11am on Saturday 31st March on the forecourt outside Te Papa Museum.
The Wellington Animal Rights Network says the
protest will be very noisy as dozens of activists with drums
and whistles arrive to disrupt the conference and draw
attention to the environmental damage and animal cruelty
caused by the meat industry.
Spokesperson Mark Eden says “The meat industry is the most destructive and cruel industry in the country and our message to people is that we have to take action ourselves to stop animal cruelty and environmental destruction by boycotting the meat industry”.
“Minister of Agriculture Jim Anderton is a scumbag who puts the interests of the meat industry ahead of the interests of animals and public opinion every time. We are telling him and his animal abusing mates that we are giving up on lobbying and asking politicians to do the right thing. We are sick of wasting our time on petitions that go nowhere because the government doesn’t care. We are sick of being polite while grey suited greedy bastards make decisions that
We are taking our message direct to the public because we know that educating the public about the benefits of a vegan diet is far more useful than spending even one second talking to a politician. And we will take out message direct to the animal abusers by costing them money because money is the only language they understand. We will be breaking into factory farms and taking animals out of harms way and we do think that destroying property is worth doing if it saves lives” said Mr Eden
Every year New Zealand slaughters around 24 million lambs, 2.2 million beef cattle, 1 million dairy calves, 750,000 deer, 350,000 pigs and 67 million chickens. “All of these animals are individuals who deserve to be free from pain and suffering. Every second of every minute of every day, an animal dies a horrible violent death in a slaughterhouse. There is no such thing as `humane slaughter'” said Mr Eden
