Avoid calorie-laden guilt this Easter

MEDIA RELEASE 04 April 2007

Avoid calorie-laden guilt this Easter

For the many Kiwis who will spend Easter Monday regretting the number of chocolate treats they’ve devoured over the holiday weekend, international aid and development agency ChildFund New Zealand is offering a practical way to turn guilt into good.

ChildFund is challenging New Zealanders to give up the calorie laden guilt this Easter in favour of giving the meaningful gift of ten baby chickens to a family in need – bringing hope to children for whom Easter is just another day of hardship.

ChildFund National Director Paul Brown says, “For many of us overindulgence in Easter treats such as hot crossed buns and chocolate is the Easter norm, but for millions of children living in desperate poverty, there is never enough food. Their lack of food supply makes hunger and malnutrition the number one health risk worldwide – greater than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined.”

For just $25 Kiwis can make the gift of ten baby chickens a reality for a family in need through ChildFund’s Gifts that Grow catalogue.

“Ten chickens represents a lifeline for some families. Not only will they provide eggs to eat and to sell at market but they will also go on to produce more chickens, offering the family a chance to improve their future self sufficiency.”

Kiwis keen to turn the annual Easter overindulgence into something positive can purchase the gift of baby chickens and a range of other practical gifts that will improve the prospects of vulnerable children through ChildFund’s ‘Gifts That Grow’ initiative on the ChildFund website: www.childfund.org.nz/catalogue, or by phoning: 0800 223 111
