Towards 2030 - Mega-Change Driver
Social inequalities

This presentation will be given by Charles Waldegrave

Charles Waldegrave currently leads the Family Centre Social Policy Research Unit and is joint leader of the New Zealand Poverty Measurement Project

Internationally large social inequalities in societies tend to be destabilising and in extreme cases can result in civil war and anarchy. Overcoming social inequalities has an important role in addressing the issues of the future particularly as communities struggle for natural resources that are now becoming scarce.

New Zealand had a period of relative social equality during the three post war decades, but since then greater inequalities have arisen. In the new millennium New Zealand has made some important progress on addressing inequalities, but still has a long way to go.

Wider social inequalities will be a major driver of change over the next quarter century.
