Young Labour calls for Subway Boycott

Young Labour have called on the country's young people to boycott Subway restaurants nationwide after management in a Dunedin store fired a vulnerable worker over a $4 drink which the worker shared with a distressed friend.

"Subway is throwing their weight around and intimidating vulnerable workers like Jackie Lang," said Young Labour President, Meg Bates. "Not only does it appear management ignore procedural fairness, they have got the police involved in this trivial matter."

Young Labour Union Representative, Jeremy Greenbrook-Held said, “Workers need to know that that they are not alone. Employers take advantage all the time, and joining a union will help to protect your rights.”

Greenbrook-Held also drew attention to the way fast food companies like Subway exploit vulnerable workers through Youth Rates. "Fast-food companies like Subway rely on young people for the majority of their staff, but treat them with little respect often ignoring their rights and paying them youth rates. Young workers rights and conditions will improve once Youth Rates are abolished,”

Young Labour supports the rights of all workers and would encourage other young people to do their bit to help Ms Lang by boycotting Subway stores.
