Grey Power National President outraged
Grey Power National President, Mr Graham Stairmand, expressed total horror at the electricity disconnection of Folole Muliaga, which caused her death
He said it is totally unacceptable for Mercury Energy to have a policy whereby sub- contractors disconnect electricity supply without discretion where a consumer has a legitimate reason or explanation.
He said not only are our 89,000 members very concerned but also the wider community of elderly people, young families and people with special needs, such as home dialysis machines. Electricity retailers must recognize that they have a responsibility to consumers in these situations.
The Government must also accept responsibility on this issue because of its lack of decision on regulating electricity suppliers. They must now insist that the model retail contract that has been developed is a basic mandatory for all retailers.
Mr Stairmand further said that in this instance the police should be investigating a potential manslaughter charge to help to ensure that such a tragedy never happens again.
