Telling the climate change story and motivating sustainable behaviour

Presented by Alex Hannant

Climate change is a global challenge that requires immediate individual and collective action. Information alone is unlikely to generate the comprehensive enthusiasm and action needed to be effective. This presentation, (based on an understanding how humans actually work) explores the techniques and processes available for getting people involved in the issue, and possible strategies for their successful application.

Alex Hannant has a background in education and international marketing. He has recently completed a Masters in Development Studies at Victoria University where his research investigation applied strategic thinking models to the issue of climate change communications and engagement. Last year, Alex worked with Airplane Studios to produce 'Sleeping Giants', a DVD resource on climate change that has been distributed through a range of New Zealand networks. In April 2007, he ran 'Making Change' - a conference exploring the communications issues relating to climate change in association with British Council, Victoria University of Wellington and the Ministry for the Environment. Alex is a director of Mandarin Communications, a company that aims to promote dialogue and innovation with regard to sustainable development.
