Ministry helping in search for the next Peter Jackson

The Ministry for the Environment is supporting an innovative film-making project to give young people their say on sustainability.

The Outlook for Someday is a film challenge about sustainability and how young people see New Zealand’s future.

The acting Environment Minister David Parker said sustainability was about making sure the environment we enjoy today is left clean and green for future generations. “The young people of today will inherit a world shaped by the decisions we adults are making. It’s important we hear about their hopes and visions for that future.”

The Ministry for the Environment’s Household Sustainability Programme is one of the project’s funding partners. The programme’s manager, Martyn Pinckard, said the Ministry for the Environment will feature the winning films on its new sustainability website at www.sustainability.govt.nz from December.

“Everyday actions have a huge impact on our environment, which is why the Ministry has made household sustainability a key part of its work programme in 2007.

“The Outlook for Someday is a great way to get the under-20s to have their say on sustainability and what it means for them, in a really creative and innovative way,”

Project Director David Jacobs, of Connected Media, said “Young people have a right to participate in our national conversation on sustainability. It affects their future and their lives now. This project is aimed at growing young awareness and young ability. We're asking young New Zealanders to respond creatively to the challenge of sustaining ourselves and our planet.”

The Outlook for Someday is a partnership between Connected Media, The Enviroschools Foundation and the Global Education Centre. Anyone up to the age of 20 is eligible to enter the film challenge.
