Sydney climate declaration fails critical test: binding greenhouse targets

APEC leaders have failed to take meaningful action to fight climate change and the Sydney Declaration announced this afternoon has side-stepped a commitment to binding targets on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, Clean Up Australia said.

“Communities in more than 120 countries that are members of the Clean Up the World campaign will be disappointed that APEC leaders have failed to make a commitment to fight climate change,” Clean Up Australia Chairman Ian Kiernan AO said.

“An estimated 35 million people get involved in Clean Up the World and they are all demonstrating their commitment to reducing greenhouse emissions through activities in their communities. APEC leaders have let them all down.

“Nothing less than binding targets to reduce greenhouse emissions is going to make a difference and limit the impacts of dangerous climate change. Aspirational targets are vague and unenforceable.”

The Clean Up the World Weekend will take place next weekend and Mr Kiernan said it will be individuals in communities across more than 120 countries that will show political leaders how action on climate change should be done.
