The West Coast Branch
of the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society has
welcomed the blockade of a coal carrier in Lyttleton Harbour
by the Greenpeace vessel Rainbow Warrior.
“Climate
change is the biggest threat to biodiversity and ecosystems
in the 21st century, with around one-quarter of species
predicted to become extinct. The continued burning of
coal is the greatest contributor to climate change, as it
produces far more CO2 per energy produced that any other
fossil fuel.” said Dr Brian Anderson, spokesperson for the
West Coast Branch.
“Even though the coal is burnt
overseas, climate change knows no borders and the impacts
will be felt in this country.”
“We only wish that the
government had the same courage to tackle the issue that
the activists who blockaded the export of coal
from Lyttleton. New Zealand is exporting coal as quickly
as it can with no thought for the consequences for
biodiversity” concluded Dr
Anderson.
