Good News For Separating
Families
Relationship Services welcomes the amendments
to the Family Court Matters Bill proposed by the Select
Committee today.
“The ability for children to be seen within the Family Court counselling services heralds a new era for separating families”, says Relationship Services’ Chief Executive Jeff Sanders.
“Our experience and research has shown that better outcomes are possible for children and families when children’s voices are heard”.
Mr Sanders says “Family Court counselling can assist parents through the difficulties and stress of separation, and when this Bill is passed, they will be able to better support their children’s needs in this process”.
“It is imperative that children are protected from having to choose between their parents. This proposed new service will assist parents to hear their children’s wishes without drawing them into decision making”, Mr Sanders says.
“We are confident parents across New Zealand will welcome this new opportunity for their children to participate with them in the development of appropriate parenting plans”, says Mr Sanders.
Relationship Services worked with 8,600 parents last year to help them work out day to day care and contact arrangements. It also runs the Parenting through Separation courses in many communities.
