Government "Reconsidering" Emissions Trading Charges And Petrol Taxes.

Energy Minister David Parker says higher petrol prices are causing the Government to reconsider proposed emissions trading charges to be imposed on petrol next year and said by some critics to be at least five cents a litre.

Speaking on TVOne's "Agenda" today Mr Parker said: "Well we are conscious of the fact that people are facing high oil prices and food prices at the moment and these are things that the Government and the Select Committee will be considering as they look at the Emissions Trading legislation I'm sure."

Asked by interviewer Rawdon Christie whether the Government was looking at just emissions trading charges or petrol taxes as well, Mr Parker said he thought all of those things were being considered by the Government.

"I can't give you a definite indication as to what it is that we will do, the most important of these instruments is the Emissions Trading Scheme it's very important for the country that we manage our emissions down in the way that costs the least."
