Fight Against P on “Inmates affected by mental illness “

New figures have emerged from a pilot screening study in Canterbury, showing that as many as one-quarter of prison inmates have serious and undiagnosed mental-health problems - far more than the 5 per cent currently identified.

This hardly seems surprising when we're continually being told that methamphetamine offenders are clogging up our judicial systems and jails.

Methamphetamine use causes brain damage, which leads to mental health issues, which leads to crime in order to fund their methamphetamine habit, which leads to incarceration. This must account for a large percentage of the inmates who are affected by mental illness.

We already have legislation which has made using P against the law. But Police will not implement this law, even at the request of desperate parents. All the resources are put into apprehending the Manufacturers and Dealers.

If demand was reduced through intervention of known P users, and adequate education provided to deter others from starting P - or any other illicit substance - then many Dealers and Manufacturers would become redundant.

Fight Against P urges the Police to form a nationwide partnership with families and communities in order to identify and rehabilitate illicit substance abusers early, before they commit other crimes and end up in jail.

This would go a long way towards reducing the number of inmates with mental illness, as well as providing numerous other benefits to our families and communities.
