Conference to be a first step in understanding what it means to be truly ‘multicultural’ in NZ

Kowiana Association of New Zealand, an organisation representing young Korean Kiwis and their friends, announces its first annual conference to discuss issues of multiculturalism to be held at the University of Auckland Business School, 18th – 19th of July.

Multiculturalism is an issue of considerable relevance to this group and New Zealand society as a whole. This conference is an important and exciting first step for Kowiana in helping people understand what it means to be truly ‘multicultural’.

The conference, ‘Kimchi and Marmite 08’, will include influential speakers, intriguing stories of young people and interesting seminars addressing key issues for young people growing up in a multicultural New Zealand.

“All of us producing Kowiana’s conference are young Kowis and Kiwis who are passionate about doing something positive to focus on multicultural issues for Kowi’s and for the wider NZ society,” says Sarah Kim, President of Kowiana Association of New Zealand.

‘Kowi’, a fusion of the words Korean and Kiwi, is a term used to describe the fusion of New Zealand and Korean cultures and identities which Kowiana represents.

‘Finding Kowi’ is the theme of the event, which will explore this unique identity.

Kowiana Association of New Zealand is committed to reaching and connecting young Kowis and their friends to provide education, support and opportunities to address issues of multiculturalism. Koreans are the third largest Asian ethnic group in NZ with a median age of 24.6 and the largest residency in Auckland. (from statistics NZ)
