SOLO-NZ Press Release: New Brighton Police Disgusting
August 7, 2008
Commenting on the Christchurch dairy owner who protected life, wife, limb and property with an air pistol after he was attacked by machete-wielding robbers, New Brighton Detective Constable Grant said that the owner's actions were "not good practice." He said police advice was to comply with robbers and "get them in and out as quick as possible."
"To hell with that and to hell with Detective Constable Grant of the New Brighton Police. Police dispensing such advice in light of the fatal shooting of Navtej Singh is an irresponsible disgrace," says SOLO spokesman Lance Davey.
"Good practice should always be the immediate defense of one's person, family and property. If shooting knife-wielding lunatics (who have already tried to slash your throat) in the face with an air-gun is what it takes, then that is what it takes. It was only by the owner's quick reactions, and I must say intestinal fortitude, to stand there, take aim and fire the air gun (an extremely ineffective weapon), that he was successful in fending off the attack.
"Had he been in a country where the right to self-defense is not gimped by disallowing even non-lethal methods of personal protection, his safety would have been less in doubt. As it stands I cannot help but cringe when I think of how close he came to being yet another murder victim in the headlines.
"To Detective Constable Grant I say the owner's actions were good practice, you sanctimonious prick. And to the Christchurch dairy owner I say, well done and may you live a long, healthy life - even though now the police have taken away the air gun that previously ensured that. Be assured that if they charge you, they won't know what hit them."
