“The next government needs to move hastily to create rehab programs and centres to address the needs of the 10 000 people in this nation who are dependant on daily does of opiates.” said Larry Buldock, leader of the Kiwi Party.

“This is why one of our policies is to establish community and/or faith based projects to address this problem which costs the country over $ 250 million a year,” he said

“It is a well known fact that the closer treatment is to the addict’s geographical and relational roots, the more favourable the results. Never is drug dependency the only issue in a person’s life. It doesn’t take much talking to someone seeking rehabilitation to see that their addiction is a fruit of other tragedies. Community based detox centres are in a better position to help the reforming addict repair significant relationships and catch those who would have otherwise fallen through the cracks of a state run program.

“It is imperative that we shorten the time span from when a person is diagnosed with a drug problem to when they begin treatment not only for their sakes but also their loved ones. Should this recession continue, financial pressures will cause more social issues which in turn will increase, rather than decrease this problem in our country. We need to act now and we need to move fast,” Mr Baldock said.
