Bell Gully’s Damian Stone new co-president of Mâori Law Society

Bell Gully senior associate Damian Stone (Ngâti Kahungunu) has been elected as co-president of Te Hunga Roia Mâori o Aotearoa (the Mâori Law Society).

Damian and Jolene Patuawa, an associate with Kensington Swan, were elected as co-presidents at the Mâori Lawyers’ Conference, held in Rotorua from 9-11 October.

Te Hunga Roia Mâori o Aotearoa, established in 1988, provides a forum for Mâori lawyers to discuss and debate issues relevant to Mâori. Its growing membership, which includes judges, parliamentarians, practitioners and legal academics, is evidence of the organisation’s standing and influence.

Damian, a corporate lawyer and recognised expert on Treaty of Waitangi matters, is enthusiastic about the new role. “It’s a chance to give back to an organisation that has given a lot of Mâori law students and lawyers a great deal of professional support over the years”.

Damian is also mindful of the responsibilities that will come with the new role. “Given the calibre of membership, and the standing of those who have held this position in the past, it is an honour and a privilege to be elected to the role. We are keen to continue the good work of those who have made the organisation the success it is today.”
