Glenda Fryer Nominates for Labour Selection in Mt Albert
Auckland City Councillor Glenda Fryer today announced she will be seeking the New Zealand Labour Party nomination for the seat of Mt Albert.. The Labour Party opened nominations for the seat on Friday 3 April and they close 22 April.
Councillor Fryer said, "The short time frame of the by-election will mean the candidate chosen will have to be well-known to the people of Mt Albert, and known to be effective, competent and hard working."
"I have represented Mt Albert as a City Councillor since 2001 and have twice topped the poll. I am a successful and experienced political campaigner. My name is well known and my re-election in 2004 and 2007 suggests the people of Mt Albert are positive about the work I have been doing representing the ward on the Auckland City Council. Of course there is a leap of responsibility and focus when moving from Councillor to Member of Parliament, but many of the local issues are the same.."
"Local people are worrying about whether the National-led Government will ram a motoway through the suburbs of, Avondale and Mt Albert instead of the tunnel preferred by the community. As the Councillor I support the tunnel option as the best solution, both environmentally and socially, but the ultimate decision for the funding lies with Parliament. This will be one of the important issues of this by-election campaign," said Councillor Fryer.
Councillor Fryer was the Chair of the Eden-Albert Community Board before being elected to Council. She was a trade union organiser with the Service and Food Workers Union (formerly the Hotel, Hospital and Restaurant Workers Union) and a senior lecturer in the Business and Arts Faculty at the Auckland University of Technology for 11 years.
Glenda Fryer has lived in the Mt Albert electorate since 1980 with her husband Shale Chambers and her four children. She has served on the Unitec Council (formally Carrington Technical Institute), Balmoral School Board of Trustees, the New Zealand Dental Council, the Auckland Regional Employment Access Council and was Chair of the Auckland State Housing Allocation Committee.
"All of New Zealand wishes Rt Hon Helen Clark well in her new job with the United Nations Development Agency - she will be a very hard act to follow," concluded Councillor Glenda Fryer.
