Women’s Refuge part of $10,000 giving challenge

22/04/09

Press Release

Whanau Awhina Women’s Refuge is part of the $10,000 Givealittle challenge

Givealittle.co.nz recently shortlisted projects to be involved in a challenge to stimulate everyday people to create a project for good.

I submitted an idea to give children who come into Women’s Refuge a smile by providing a new set of clothes and a pair of shoes.

In 2008 we had 122 children stay with their mothers in our safe-house - often the children come into refuge with only the clothes they are standing in.

These children are traumatised by the domestic violence they have been subjected too, displaying behaviour such as withdrawn, aggressive, over vigilant, sad, untrusting etc.

We believe by providing these children with a new set of clothes and a pair of shoes they will feel a sense of pride in themselves, giving their self esteem a boost and the knowing that someone does care about them.

Each shortlisted project has one month to gather supporters and raise donations. On Friday 22 May 2009 the project with the highest number of givers will receive $1 for each giver up to a maximum of $10,000.
