Druis Barrett is a member of the Families Commission's Whanau Reference Group - which is an advisory committee made up of external advisors. Ms Barrett indicated in January that she was considering resigning as her other commitments were making it difficult for her to attend meetings . She said at the time she felt that the committee work was on track and may benefit more from the input of a Maori academic advisor.

In an email sent last night , Druis said she had made up her mind and would be sending in a formal letter of resignation next week. She mentioned Ms Rankin's appointment as yet another reason for deciding to resign from the committee.

Chairman of the committee, Commissioner Kim Workman said the Commission is saddened by her decision and would like to thank her for the contribution she has made to the committee and to the work of the Commission. Mr Workman, says the organisation's commitment to Maori is stronger than it has ever been , and over the next six months staff and Commissioners will be meeting with Maori and iwi organisations to discuss and promote whanau development.
