Commuter train campaign huge success

Commuter train campaign huge success

Campaign For Better Transport

The Campaign For Better Transport's Hamilton to Auckland commuter train campaign has been so successful, the group have had to order the printing of thousands more of the postcards they are getting people to sign to show their support.

New Zealand's major sustainable transport lobby group has been inundated with phone calls and emails from the public supporting the call for commuter rail services to be set up between Hamilton and Auckland. CBT spokesman Jon Reeves says the reaction is overwhelming and one thing is clear, New Zealanders want passenger rail services between major cities.

To cope with the demand for postcards supporting the Waikato commuter trains, the CBT is employing a team in Hamilton to distribute the cards around the city. The team will be in bright green t-shirts with "Waikato Trains Now" printed on them.

Mr Reeves says apart from strong support from MP Sue Moroney for commuter rail link between the two cities, the local Hamilton MP's David Bennett and Tim MacIndoe seem oblivious to what their electorates are asking for. He says they hope those MP's will react positively as they continue to receive thousands of pro-commuter train postcards in their mail boxes.

A recent business case study undertaken by Environment Waikato show the commuter trains to Auckland have a better cost benefit ration than many roading projects in the region. Environment Waikato are now also being asked to step up to the mark and make a funding application to the NZ Transport Agency.
