NCWNZ: Boycott to move beyond this hemisphere

Baby t-shirts carrying offensive slogans, which till late were only communicated in English, will now get the French treatment ensuring they are understood by all nationalities present, reports the National Council of Women of New Zealand (NCWNZ).

New Zealand is again participating in the International Council of Women (ICW-CIF) General Assembly, which is taking place from 13 to 20 October 2009, in Johannesburg, South Africa.

NCWNZ’s resolution on the sexualisation of children through production, marketing and retailing of children’s products will be voted on at the ICW General Assembly. The resolution calls on the ICW affiliated members to urge their governments to ban products and advertising materials that enable children to be seen as sexual objects.

The New Zealand delegation, led by Elizabeth Bang, NCWNZ National President, has today joined other ICW affiliated members to begin evaluating the progress of women around the world in their struggle for equality and dignity.
“We have also been asked by ICW to present a paper on recent activities undertaken in New Zealand to stop the sexualisation of childhood, including the Cotton Off Our Kids,” Elizabeth Bang said.

“The objectives for the coming week are to assess achievements since the last meeting, define goals and strategies for the future, and strengthen and develop global connections.

“This sets a positive framework for initiatives such as the Boycott of Sexualisation of Childhood, which replaced the targeted campaign against Cotton On. We hope to see an increased global effort supporting this campaign.”
ICW is an international, non-political, non-governmental organisation which represents millions of women in its affiliated councils in all continents of the globe. The 63 National Council of Women affiliated to ICW meet every three years for the General Assembly, working together to improve the status of women and the well-being of society.
