Let's spread the pools

Let's spread the pools

A model proposed by officers that includes refurbishing existing school pools is an intelligent way to bring water safety and fitness to people in their own areas. "Fewer drownings and more fitness are essential in this maritime capital," says Celia Wade-Brown, a keen snorkeller and kayaker.

Council's priority must be "learn to swim". Improving primary school learn-to-swim availability and opening up access for others in evenings and weekends will take the pressure off space at the WRAC in Kilbirnie.

Schools and parents have issues with time away from school and the cost of transport to the WRAC. Cr Coughlan's expensive model of another centralised pool does not address either of these factors.

We already work with community groups that own their own centres such as Brooklyn Community Centre as well as supporting our own facilities like Newlands Community Centre.

Wellington City will only make genuine progress in sports, safety and other areas if we work in collaboration and partnership with our city organisations rather than purely focussing on our 100%-owned assets.

"Let's maximise use of existing resources to save energy, time and money!" says Celia Wade-Brown.
