Children's Day celebration at Parliament cancelled
Children's Day celebration at Parliament
cancelled
Due to the Christchurch earthquake, Every
Child Counts* has called off the special Children's Day
event it was planning at Parliament on Thursday 3
March.
The devastation in Christchurch means that
the lead agencies involved in Every Child Counts are busy
providing practical support to staff and to the children and
young people they work with in Canterbury.
We also
recognise that Members of Parliament are focussed on the
recovery effort in Christchurch, and that is the appropriate
place for MPs to focus at this time.
We also feel
strongly the need to show respect to the children and
families of Christchurch, hence our decision to cancel our
event.
* Every Child Counts is a coalition
driven by Barnardos, Plunket, UNICEF, Save the Children, and
Te Kahui Mana Ririki, with thousands of individuals, working
to improve the status and wellbeing of New Zealand
children.
