A Week is a Long Time in Politics

The Ordinary Kiwis Party is out to prove that a week really is a long time in politics. As the freshest face on the political scene, the Ordinary Kiwis Party needs 500 signed-up members within a week to be able to stand in this year's election. While it is a big task Sylvan, their President, is confident they can succeed; "We have done the initial preparation, we have created the infrastructure for a truly people centred party, now we need to focus on the technical requirements for registration."

Ordinary Kiwis intends to turn New Zealand politics on its head. The people will have a role in policymaking and candidate selection never before seen in New Zealand politics. The party aims to end the days of back room deals and secret agendas by replacing career politicians with enthusiastic people who really understand what life outside parliament is like. Then to ensure they don't get a chance to forget, limit them to a maximum of three or four terms in parliament.

Ordinary Kiwis policy focuses on innovative ways of improving quality of life and makes sustainability a goal in environmental and economic management. Ordinary Kiwis policy also promotes each citizen to take greater control of their own destiny and more responsibility for their own actions.

Kiwis will have personal accounts to use on their health and when they are not earning. These will be funded in a similar manner to existing KiwiSaver accounts where employees and employers both contribute but tax rates will be reduced to ensure that neither employees nor employers are out of pocket. Individuals will be able to make the best choices for themselves ranging from having annual health and dental checks through to taking extended leave or early retirement.

Issues such as child abuse, intergenerational welfare dependency and an obesity epidemic are all long-term problems that require long-term solutions. The Ordinary Kiwis Party is committed to taking a long-term approach to solving these issues. The Ordinary Kiwi response will start with building up our human infrastructure. Our social workers, counsellors, nurses and teachers will need to be better resourced as we tackle these problems. Sylvan concludes, "It will not be an easy task, but the Ordinary Kiwis Party has the innovation, flexibility and profound commitment to fellow Kiwis to make it happen."
