24 hours of Dungeons and Dragons to keep MMP and improve it
24 hours of Dungeons and Dragons to keep MMP and make it even better
At noon on Saturday 12 November four brave adventurers and an even braver Dungeon Master will sit down at the Crossways Centre in Wellington for a 24 hour Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) marathon to raise money for the campaign to keep MMP.
Joseph Kelly, Dungeon Master for the game explains:
"Dungeons and Dragons is a social game where every player and every character brings their unique skills to the table to work together to conquer evil and make the world better for everyone.
"The Dungeon Master creates a world from the players to explore and fills it with monsters to slay, innocents to save and devious puzzles and traps to avoid. After that, it’s up to the players to work together to find their way through all the perils that I’ve set up.
“I’ve been Dungeon Mastering since my high school days in Nelson and this is without a doubt the biggest challenge I’ve faced.”
Four players will join Joseph in the game: Phill Jones will play a graceful and charming Elf; Steve Rhoades is a compassionate and constant Cleric; Robert Whitaker is a stubborn but loyal Dwarf; and Pia Baarspul is a fiery and unpredictable Sorceress.
Robert Whitaker is also looking forward to the unique challenge D&D for MMP presents:
“24 hours is a long time to concentrate on a cerebral game like D&D. We will have to tap in to the power of energy drinks, pizza and coffee to keep us going and when you add into the mix that we are playing in front of an audience, well the stakes are even higher.”
The group is raising money by encouraging supporters to donate to influence the game. Donations totalling $750 have already equipped the Dwarf with a magically charged axe, cursed the Sorceress so she can only ask questions for a full hour and set a horde of zombies against the heroes (including one called Wellywood that refuses to die).
Additionally, everybody is encouraged to come along to watch or to get involved in the game themselves. The event runs from 12 noon on Saturday to 12 noon on Sunday at Crossways Centre, 6 Roxburgh Street, Mount Victoria. It is open to the public throughout and there is a dinner between 6 and 8pm.
If you’ve ever been curious about what D&D is and what it looks like in action this is your chance to find out.
So why MMP? Robert Whitaker:
"We’ve been thinking about organising a sponsored D&D marathon for a while and the referendum on MMP seemed like the ideal opportunity. It's a game that's all about diversity and teamwork and we think that is a pretty great fit for a fundraiser for MMP”.
There are still many quirky and exciting challenges to be sponsored, a full list can be found on the group’s website http://dndformp.wordpress.com.
