Vote for Change launches final push for Supplementary Member

Vote for Change has today launched its final push for New Zealanders to tick Change and Supplementary Member on Saturday.

“SM is the sensible middle. It means that small parties would have representation in Parliament, able to put their policy platforms on the political agenda, but it is less likely that they would hold the balance of power and a disproportionate amount of influence.” says Michael Bassett, Former Labour Party Cabinet Minister.

Vote for Change Spokesperson Jordan Williams says, “Under MMP if a party loses an electorate, they just get an extra list MP. Under SM, if a party loses an electorate seat, the number of MPs that party receives is reduced.”

“SM is fairer. It means that electorates matter and both votes count.”

“New Zealanders are realising that ticking change doesn’t get rid of MMP, but it keeps control of the voting system in New Zealanders’ hands.”

Voting Change means a second referendum in three years time. A vote to keep MMP means a review that the politicians ultimately control. “That’s the foxes guarding the hen house,” says Mr Williams.
