Names of Karapiro Dam Workers Released | Marae Venue Changed

Names of Workers on the Karapiro Dam Released. Marae Venue Changed for Tainui Hikoi

Mighty River People's Power hope that the Waikato community will make a personal connection with asset sales this weekend by thinking about the dams of the Waikato River that will be sold.

The upcoming hikoi will be stopping at Karapiro dam on Sunday at 1pm to highlight what is at risk from asset sales.

'Our group is really clear', says spokesperson Jamie Rolleston. 'By selling Mighty River Power, the government is selling out on the legacy of previous generations.'

'The dams were built with the taxes and sweat of previous generations.'

Mighty River People's Power has released a list of workers from the Karapiro project in the 1940s and 1950s.

'We believe that by selling any part of Mighty River Power, the National government is betraying their legacy.'

Furthermore, due to a tangi at Ohaaki Marae the venue for this Saturday evening's pohiri has been changed. The pohiri for the hikoi will now be held at Tauwhare Marae at 7pm, after which the visiting hikoi members will be hosted by Tauwhare Marae.

On Sunday morning, the Hikoi will gather at the northern end of Victoria St in Hamilton, near the farming family, then will march to Garden Place to be received by Hamilton Hikoi supporters.

The Hikoi will then move along to Karāpiro, the site of the first dam along the Waikato River to be privatized,
