Resource Management Act changes welcomed

Resource Management Act
changes welcomed
Media release
August 11, 2013
The proposed changes to the
Resource Management Act (RMA), announced on Saturday by the
Environment Minister Amy Adams, have been welcomed by the
14-member Port CEO Group in a statement today.
“The CEO Group supports in particular the
proposed changes to sections 6 and 7, because they give due
weight to the value to society of infrastructure. We had
hoped that the Minister could have adopted other necessary
reforms, but recognise a good start has been made on making
the RMA more consistent with a prosperous and growing
economy.”
“The current section 6 of the RMA
lists “Matters of national importance” but is totally
silent on infrastructure. This in part explains why port
companies have had to spend millions of dollars, and
hundreds of hours of executive time, just to get a RMA
permit to create a channel or wharf that can handle the
larger vessels required by the export sector to remain
competitive. The changes proposed by the Minister will
go some way to remedy this deficiency.”
