Jai Davis result: - Gross Negligence okay if you work for
Corrections
The Howard League is shocked to learn today of
the decision by Police not to prosecute anyone at
Corrections for the death of Jai Davis.
When a parent
locks a child up who has taken drugs and does not ring a
doctor they are prosecuted, but if you are staff in the
Department of Corrections the Police will not prosecute
you.
New Zealand is known as a fair and just society with,
supposedly, one law for all.
However, this situation of
one law for Corrections and one for everybody else is
shocking and must not be allowed to continue.
The Minister
of Corrections, Mr Lotu-liga, needs to stand up and do the
right thing, says Howard League spokesperson Madeleine Rose.
He needs to ensure that his Ministry is accountable. New
Zealanders need to have faith that people in custody are
safe, and when Corrections’ staff offend they are held to
account, says Rose.
