Local government does not need more money from the community – MANZ

Local government needs to be told “hands off” to the idea of trying to raise the amount of revenue they get from their communities, the Motel Association of New Zealand (MANZ) says.

The discussion paper released by Local Government New Zealand that says Councils are facing a shortfall in revenue should be a sign that they need to tighten their belts and operate more efficiently rather than a cue to try and get more cash from ratepayers, MANZ Chief Executive Michael Baines says.

“Many small businesses such as motels are already suffering under the amount and cost of the red tape imposed by Councils, so the idea that they might want more money from us is nothing short of ridiculous,” Mr Baines says.

“Some Councils are in strife because of their excess spending on pet projects that were too far removed from their purpose of providing essential services for their communities. As they got themselves into this mess they should get themselves out - cutting back on the inflated salaries that some Councils pay their executives would be a great start,” Mr Baines says.

Just because local bodies are monopoly services doesn’t mean they should be allowed to hike prices as it suits them. Instead they should operate like any other business and keep their spending under control.

In the accommodation sector policy-makers would be better put to use cracking down on untaxed and unregulated operators such as Bed and Breakfasts and Holiday Homes.

“They should be bringing these bludgers into line rather than dreaming up new reasons to wring more money out of hard working and tax-paying businesses,” Mr Baines says.
