Māori name for Te Awamutu used during Māori Language Week
Whānau promotes the use of Māori name for Te Awamutu during Māori Language Week
Media release
A local whānau of Te Awamutu (Ōtāwhao) would like the town to use its Māori name 'Ōtāwhao' during Māori Language Week.
Manaaki Daniels, who was born and bred in Ōtāwhao, is encouraging local business, schools and community groups to use Otāwhao for the whole week, such as:
Te Karere o
Ōtāwhao Te Awamutu Courier
Te Kura Waenga o
Ōtāwhao Te Awamutu Intermediate
Te Whare Pukapuka o
Ōtāwhao Te Awamutu Library
Te Awamutu is not the original name for the area around Ōtāwhao.
'Te Awamutu' was given to Ōtāwhao at the time of the missionaries in the 1860s, but the original Ōtāwhao Pā stood on Alexander and Tāwhiao Streets.
'It would be great if local businesses would answer the phone for Māori Language Week and say 'Kia ora, welcome to Ōtāwhao (etc etc),' says Ms Daniels.
'It will be awesome to promote local Māori history during Māori Language Week, by bringing back the name Ōtāwhao.'
Māori Language Week starts next week on 27 July.
