AUCKLAND – October 6, 2015 Norton by Symantec today announced a partnership with 49ers NFL newcomer Jarryd Hayne that will aim to raise awareness about cyberbullying and educate consumers about online crime.

“The online world is a big and enjoyable part of my life,” said Jarryd Hayne. “Being so far away from home, the Internet and social media is a great way for me to keep in contact with my family, friends and supporters, and stay informed about what’s happening in Australia. I want the Internet to be a safe place for everyone and I’m pleased to be partnering with Norton to raise awareness about online security and cyberbullying issues,” added Hayne.

“Jarryd shares our passion of wanting to keep people safe online and we are delighted to be partnering with him,” said Mark Gorrie, Director, Pacific region, Norton by Symantec. “As one of the country’s most ambitious sports stars, an active social media user, online gamer and a prominent role model for many Australians, Jarryd embodies the perfect qualities for a Norton online security ambassador. We look forward to partnering with him on his incredible journey,” added Gorrie.

Jarryd Hayne presents $123,000 to beyondblue on behalf of Norton
As Norton’s online security ambassador, Hayne presented AUD$123,000 to beyondblue, the Australian depression and anxiety initiative. The funds will be used to strengthen and build on beyondblue’scyberbullying resources, and point parents and young people towards information and support about how to identify and respond to cyberbullying.

“In my first role as Norton’s ambassador, I am honoured to be presenting a cheque for $123,000 to beyondblue which will help to make a positive impact to our online community,” said Hayne. “We often don’t realise how detrimental cyberbullying can be until it’s too late and I hope my involvement in Norton’s cause will encourage anyone experiencing cyberbullying to seek help.”

“All too often people think that whatever happens in the online world is not as hurtful as the physical world, but that’s not true. Cyberbullying can have a long-lasting impact, particularly on teenagers and young adults, and it can be a risk factor for depression, anxiety and youth suicide. It’s important we look out for each other, both in the physical and online world, and try to tackle cyberbullying to help improve and potentially save lives,” added Hayne.

“A recent Norton survey of 1,000 Australians found that more than one in five young adults (21 per cent) experiences cyberbullying, revealing how widespread this issue really is. beyondblue does extraordinary work to address cyberbullying in our community, and Norton is thrilled to have Jarryd helping to raise awareness of this issue by supporting our donation,” said Gorrie.

“Making the online world a safe place is central to our business and we hope our contribution will assist anyone experiencing cyberbullying and go a long way to reducing the incidence of depression, anxiety and youth suicide in Australia,” added Gorrie.

beyondblue CEO Georgie Harman said, “The partnership between beyondblue and Norton, now in its third year, goes from strength to strength and is of immeasurable benefit to the community. Norton is helping to save lives by protecting the mental health of teenagers and young adults by focusing on the extremely harmful repercussions of thoughtless acts of bullying, trolling and discrimination online.

“beyondblue’s work is increasingly being carried out in the digital world which makes our partnership with Norton more important than ever. This donation will help people to find beyondblue information about what to do if they feel threatened online and how to support their mental health. We are extremely grateful, and we thank Norton by Symantec and Jarryd Hayne for their generous and ongoing support,” Ms Harman said.

Norton by Symantec has partnered with beyondblue since 2013 and throughout the partnership has donated approximately $700,000 to raise awareness and address cyberbullying in our community. Norton has been operating in the Australian market for approximately 25 years and is headquartered in Mountain View, California.

The beyondblue Support Service is available 24/7 on 1300 22 4636. There is also an online chat function at www.beyondblue.org.au/get-support between 3pm and midnight AEST, seven days a week, or people can send an email from the website for a response within 24 hours.

Gordon Campbell: On The Elusive Charms Of Christopher Luxon

Well, the first 36 hours of viewing the Christopher Luxon selfie were always going to be the best, before the repetitions set in. We get it, already. He’s an extroverted/big ego/high achieving/God fearing/country music lovin’/family man who is not at all averse to mansplaining to little ladies like RNZ’s Kathryn Tyan what “technical” words like “productivity” actually mean. But wait, there’s more. National is back! Mind you, that’s not the Bad National of recent experience, but the Good National of days gone by... More>>
