Heading overseas this holiday season? Remember to register with SafeTravel

MFAT Consular divisional manager Lyndal Walker says it’s important that New Zealanders travelling overseas register their details atsafetravel.govt.nz.

“Given the increased risk of cyclones in the Pacific this season, registering with SafeTravel means we can get in touch ahead of a serious weather event or immediately afterwards.

“If there is a major incident in any part of the world, registering with SafeTravel means you will be one of the first to be contacted.

“And if something serious does happen while you’re out of the country, make sure you let family back in New Zealand know you’re ok.”

“When the attacks occurred in Paris last month, we were contacted by many family members concerned about their loved ones in Paris. When people haven’t registered with us, they can be difficult to trace. That makes it much harder to quickly confirm the safety and well-being of our Kiwis.

“Save everyone some worry: register with us and then call home as soon as you can if something does happen.

“And remember to take out comprehensive travel insurance that covers all activities on your holiday, including unforeseen medical costs.

“If you want to read up about your destination before you go, check out safetravel.govt.nz for the latest New Zealand Government travel advice.”
