Green MP opposes cannabis referendum

Green MP opposes cannabis referendum

------------------------------------

Green MP Marama Davidson is opposing a referendum about medical cannabis and says "it is better to continue with the work to date by Peter Dunne".

This is despite revelations Peter Dunne was working extensively with a fraudulent charity, United in Compassion New Zealand.

Peter Dunne worked with United In Compassion NZ and appeared with its CEO Toni-Marie Matich on TVNZ's Q+A show, after Kiwibank had already raised financial concerns about the charity.

Cannabis Party leader Julian Crawford said both Peter Dunne and Marama Davidson were trying to block progress on a cannabis referendum, denying the public their democratic right to have a say.

"Why should the Green Party decide it's not the right time for a referendum, delaying debate about this issue? The truth is the Greens are afraid of supporting their own cannabis policy," he said.

"The last time the Greens teamed up with Peter Dunne was to support the disastrous psychoactive substances legislation."

The Greens should remember that in 2002 Dunne made an agreement with Helen Clark that the government could not relax the cannabis laws. In 2008 John Key agreed to continue the same agreement with Dunne.
