Monarchy New Zealand welcomes Dame Patsy Reddy as GG

Monarchy New Zealand welcomes the announcement that The Queen of New Zealand has appointed Dame Patsy Reddy, DNZM, as the next Governor-General of New Zealand. Dame Patsy will replace His Excellency, Sir Jerry Mateparae, in September, as the 21st Governor-General of New Zealand. The appointment, made by the Queen, was announced by her Prime Minister today. It has been well received and is indicative of the respect held for both the office of Governor-General and Dame Patsy.

A former lawyer, director, and Crown negotiator, Dame Patsy is a well-known and respected figure. She most recently worked on the intelligence agencies review.

"Dame Patsy has spent much of her life working for New Zealanders. As Governor-General she will continue this role of service. Like the Queen, the Governor-General is here to serve all New Zealanders, to consider the best interests of the nation, and to safeguard the constitution,” says Monarchy New Zealand Chair Dr Sean Palmer.

"The process of appointing a Governor-General is fundamental to the constitutional structure that nurtures New Zealand's democracy. Discussions take place throughout government, between elected officials, and with the palace to ensure a good decision. I think successive governments have come to realise that kiwis expect non-partisan Governors-General. There is certainly no need for a politician in this role. People from many different walks of life can contribute to the democratic process, as Dame Patsy will demonstrate."

The Queen, the Governor-General, and the Prime Minister each have a different role to play in our constitutional structure and each is extremely important in maintaining the balance of our democracy. We are confident that Dame Patsy will carry out the critical role of Governor-General very well.
