More Support Needed for Quake-Hit Communities

More Support Needed for Quake-Hit Communities, Red Cross Says

As the impact of last week’s earthquake becomes clearer, New Zealand Red Cross says more funding is needed to help affected communities rebuild and recover.

Following last week’s 7.8 magnitude earthquake, Kiwis have generously given more than $1.2 million to New Zealand Red Cross’ November Earthquakes Appeal. All funds raised from the appeal will go directly to support affected communities.

However, New Zealand Red Cross Secretary General Tony Paine says now the communities’ long-term needs are beginning to emerge, it’s apparent much more funding will be required to help the upper South Island rebuild and recover.

“This was one of the strongest earthquakes ever felt in New Zealand. We know that, along with the physical damage it has caused to homes and business, the earthquake’s impact on people’s wellbeing and the region’s economy will continue to be felt for a long time.

“We are reviewing our programmes from the Christchurch earthquakes and these will help inform our recovery efforts. We know that recovery is a marathon, not a sprint; we want to ensure that we develop the best plan for this complex and developing situation.

“We are still focused on the immediate response, especially in Kaikoura, where we continue to support the affected communities with outreach, welfare checks, providing information and distributing supplies.

“At the same time, our team is working to establish the extent of the needs in the affected communities. Early assessments have identified a range of issues — property damage, psychosocial needs, lack of water and working sewerage systems, concerns over school closures and the future of businesses in the area. We will work closely with local community agencies and the local iwi in the affected regions to find ways to best support people.”

New Zealand Red Cross has reached hundreds of people in the quake-affected regions with emergency aid, food, water, welfare checks and psychosocial support. More than 100 Red Cross field personnel have responded so far and 50 are currently on the ground assisting those affected.

With sewerage systems in Kaikoura still out of order, Red Cross has also deployed a water and sanitation specialist to the town and is delivering public health information to the local community.

Gordon Campbell: On The US Opposition To Mortgage Interest Deductibility For Landlords

Should landlords be able to deduct the interest on the loans they take out to bankroll their property speculation? The US Senate Budget Committee and Bloomberg News don't think this is a good idea, for reasons set out below. Regardless, our coalition government has been burning through a ton of political capital by giving landlords a huge $2.9 billion tax break via interest deductibility, while still preaching the need for austerity to the disabled, and to everyone else...
