Kiwi Kids Deserve
Better
Today’s release of the Child Poverty Monitor highlights yet again the importance of the Government setting targets and creating an action plan to abolish child poverty says The Salvation Army Social Policy Director Lieut. Colonel Ian Hutson.
This Christmas most of the families lining up at Salvation Army Community Centres for food and other assistance are families whose children lack some of the basic material supports, considered necessary for their well-being.
The Child Poverty Monitor is an important reminder to the Kiwi conscious that at Christmas 2016, some parents won’t just be concerned their children haven’t got nice presents. They will be more concerned their children lack some of the basic necessities of food, healthcare, housing, safety or education.
“How long do reports such as the Child Poverty Monitor need to keep highlighting this desperate situation before comprehensive action is taken” says Ian Hutson.
“With new leadership of the Government what better time to set targets and a plan that will end the suffering caused for New Zealand children through poverty.”
