Sexual Violence sector partners with ACC

MAKING A DIFFERENCE - SEXUAL VIOLENCE PRIMARY PREVENTION TOOLKIT HUI

Sexual violence is highly prevalent in New Zealand; we know that at least 1 in 5 Kiwis will experience sexual violence at some time in their lives. There are serious and long-term impacts on the physical and mental health of survivors. Te Ohaakii a Hine – National Network Ending Sexual Together (TOAH-NNEST) is looking to turn those statistics around, by partnering with the ACC Violence Prevention team to strengthen efforts to prevent sexual violence before it happens.

TOAH-NNEST and ACC are presenting three regional Hui promoting ACC’s sexual violence primary prevention toolkit, which was launched in November 2016 Click Here. This website is for sexual violence prevention providers, evaluators and funders. It outlines ‘what works’ for primary prevention, offers tools for developing evaluations, and gives case studies. The strong emphasis on evaluation offers a chance to grow a local body of evidence of what works in our communities, rather than relying solely on prevention ideas from overseas.

Tangata whenua are known leaders within the international indigenous audience and have spent many years engaging and building relationships with community to assist and respond to the impact of violence. Within a whanau ora framework, kaupapa are able to create transformational changes which will ensure a better outcome for Maori. From a national level we will be able to gauge the possibility to integrate this throughout Aotearoa.

To address the underlying causes of sexual violence, we need well-executed prevention approaches that can significantly change individual and community attitudes and behaviours, the way prevention campaigns targeting smoking and drink-driving have done.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE - SEXUAL VIOLENCE PRIMARY PREVENTION TOOLKIT HUI is a half day event and will include a workshop on using the Sexual Violence Primary Prevention Toolkit website, presentations from local providers about their experiences with evaluation and a networking lunch.

Hosted by TOAH-NNEST members, these Hui will be held in Auckland, 3 March 2017, Wellington, 22 March 2017 and Christchurch, 24 March 2017.
