Out of the Labs petition handover

The New Zealand Anti-Vivisection Society (NZAVS) and Helping You Help Animals (HUHA) presented their ‘Out of the Labs’ petition to Greens MP Mojo Mathers at Parliament today.

The ‘Out of the Labs’ petition asks Parliament to introduce a mandatory retirement policy for animals used for research, testing and teaching in Aotearoa New Zealand. This would mean that research and breeding facilities would be required to offer animals to registered animal rescues before euthanasia is considered.

NZAVS and HUHA were joined at Parliament today by members of the public who support the petition, as well as several beagles rescued, rehabilitated, and rehomed following their rescue from Valley Animal Research Centre in 2011.

“HUHA rescued these beagles, who have since become loving family members to those who adopted them. Animals are so resilient and they deserve to have the opportunity to be rehomed,” said NZAVS Campaign Manager Cressida Wilson.

“We have over 15,000 signatures on this petition, that is 15,000 New Zealanders that care about the lives of these animals. Parliament should take note of how their constituents feel on this issue,” stated Tara Jackson, Executive Director of NZAVS.

NZAVS and HUHA encourage New Zealanders who feel strongly about this issue to contact their local MP and ask that the ‘Out of the Labs’ petition be seriously considered.
